The Basque Football Federation has applied to FIFA and UEFA to be officially recognized so that the regional team can participate in international tournaments. A delegation from headquarters and the regional government traveled to FIFA headquarters in Zurich and UEFA base in Nyon to apply for full membership.

A statement on the Basque Federation`s website said it was submitting the application on behalf of its members after a 2018 general assembly vote and that the request represented the desire of the majority of Basque society.

Federation lawyer David Salinas-Armendaris said joining UEFA and FIFA was a legitimate and absolutely viable goal from a legal point of view, adding that European territories that were not independent states had been recognized by the two organizations before. Gibraltar, British territory, was accepted as a member of UEFA in 2013 and a member of FIFA in 2016.

Salinas-Armendaris added that the Basque federation is ready to negotiate with the Spanish federation on the issue and has informed the national governing body of the request. UEFA and FIFA were not immediately available for comment. The Basque Country is one of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain, but enjoys a number of privileges, including fiscal autonomy.
